What is “order of operations?” Why is it necessary? What happens if it is not followed? The Order of Operations is very important when simplifying expressions and equations. The Order of Operations is a standard that defines the order in which you should simplify different operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This standard is critical to simplifying and solving different algebra problems. Without it, two different people may interpret an equation or expression in different ways and come up with different answers. The Order of Operations is shown below. One thing I learned this week is the attitude of cooperation. Without a standard rule, a problem can be interpreted many different ways and will not arrive at the same result from a given statement. I have to agree that rules are created and are meant to be followed so there will be consistency and without confusion. #Maths #Order of Operations #Evidence of Algebraic thinking #Mastery

What is an inequality? Inequality tells us about the relative size of two values. Mathematics is not always about "equals", sometimes we only know that something is greater or less than. This symbol represents inequality ≠. Credits: Math is Fun Credits: Khan Academy My examples solving inequalities:
If x < y , then x + z < y + z Example : Tom has three dollars and Bill has six dollars. They both earned five dollars for mowing the lawn. Tom still has less money than Bill. $3 < $6 then $3 + $5 < $6 + $5 then $8 < $11 If x > y , then x + z > y + z Example : Jim has ten dollars and Sam has seven dollars. They both earned twenty dollars shoveling snow. Jim still has more money than Sam. $10 > $7 then $10 + $20 > $7 + $20 then $30 > $27 One thing I learned in solving inequalities is that to translate English words into Algebra Language. It uses symbols to make statements about things. Here, we often use letters to represent numbers and solve the unknown. #Maths #Thinker #Mastery What is an Equation? An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign "=" like this: x − 2 = 4 That equations says: what is on the left (x − 2) is equal to what is on the right (4) So an equation is like a statement "this equals that" What is a Solution? A Solution is a value we can put in place of a variable (such as x) that makes the equation true. Example: x − 2 = 4 When we put 6 in place of x we get: 6 − 2 = 4 which is true So x = 6 is a solution. How about other values for x ?

How am I feeling about this unit? This unit makes me feel anxious because I would be dealing with vocabularies related to Math especially Algebra. Variable, term, expression and algebraic rules were some of the words that are confusing to me. Beforehand, I thought these words meant to confuse me more. But as I go over the terms one by one, I felt the need to be more curious that these unknown numbers can be represented by letters. It can also help me solve unknown numbers through understanding by following the order of operations and its rules. Now that I am studying this unit, it will help me develop my abstract reasoning skills, patterns, problem-solving that are necessary to succeed in Math and Science. This unit also reminds me that it can help answer questions about finding the unknown or putting real life variables into equations, and solving them that are connected to real life situations. Below is a screenshot of my GII. #Maths #Commitment #Motivation How do we know something is a pattern? A pattern is repeated design or recurring sequence. It is an ordered set of numbers, shapes or other mathematical objects, arranged according to a rule. Here are the examples: Credits: A Maths Dictionary for Kids Below are other examples: In solving this Sudoku, I had to fill in the 3x3 blocks with numbers 1-9 making sure that no digit is repeated horizontally and vertically. I had to check horizontally and vertically if each square is filled in with the right digit. What is an algebraic rule? An algebraic rule is a method for describing the relationship between two variables. The main purpose of algebraic rules is to make sense of sets of data involving two or more variables. For example: X – 2 = 4 The letter (in this case an x) just means "we don't know this yet", and is often called the unknown or the variable. And when we solve it we write: X – 2 = 4 +2 = 4 + 2 X = 6 So, why did we add 2 to both sides? To keep the balance. Just remember this: To keep the balance, what we do to one side of the "=" we should also do to the other side! How do you find algebraic rules for a pattern? To find a missing number in a Sequence, first we must have a Rule A Sequence is a set of things (usually numbers) that are in order. Each number in the sequence is called a term (or sometimes "element" or "member"). Credits: Math is Fun Using this mathematical patterns and algebraic rules helped me to identify unknown numbers and the skill that I have learned is that, in everything that I do is to keep on going until I get it.
